Interesting.

One problem I've had with laptops in the past is lack of driver functionality, stuff like trying to play music over Ventrilo. I guess a USB audio card would fix that problem if I ever run into it again.

Hi, can this be used to pass through DTS/DD (via optical out) content to an external receiver (for decoding)? Thanks!

It can output up to 7.1 surround sound via the optical out.

Can you plug in desktop surround sound speakers that has it's own power source, directly into this USB sound card?

can this be used to PASS THROUGH DTS/DD 24bit/96kHz 24bit/192kHz (via optical out) content to an external receiver WITHOUT downsampling to 16bit/48kHz?

Past models supported passthrough of DTS/DD but the quality varied by the tweaks done within windows to internal filters and such (ffdshow,ac3). Unfortunately in the manual for the U3 online I didn't see any mention of passthrough use. Hard to say if you'd get 24/192 out of it without having a unit to actually test that on.
