Its been a long while since the fastest video card you could buy has had Radeon written on the box in red, instead of GeForce, written in green. While ATI/AMD and NVIDIA make most of their profits from video cards that sit somewhere in the middle of the performance spectrum, making the fastest card brings something that can't be measured with numbers. That something is bragging rights, solidified from the respect from everyday PC gamers everywhere.
Vying for that respect is what the HD 3870 X2 is all about. This is a serious card for the enthusiast. Today we are looking at the Asus EAH3870X2 TOP, with 1 GB of GDDR3. This mesh of metal, silicon and plastic wasn't made for people who play The Sims on the weekends. This is a dual GPU high-performance monster card that retails for around $475 USD.
Both the red guys and green guys don't seem to take many breaks. Both camps work hard on putting new products on the market, and keeping their technological edges sharp. It probably will not be long until NVIDIA releases a new card in the same class as the HD3870X2. But for now, the HD3870X2 has a very good chance of taking the performance crown from the aging king and queen of FPS, the 8800 GTX and 8800 Ultra. And some would say its about time that this happened, as the 8800 GTX first came in November of 2006.
Let's see if the Asus EAH3870X2 can usurp the competition, and take that performance crown.
February 6th update: We have updated this review to include some overclocking studies, which can be found on page four.
The only big difference with my 8.451-2.080123a-858... drivers were that Crysis performance was increased. If you are interested, here are the numbers with these drivers for that game: 64.9,61.8,61.4 [1024x768,1280x1024,1600x1200,no aa] 64.6, 62.6, 61.4 [w/ aa.]
Updated with an overclocking section today...
Hopefully 8.2 will bring out the best in this card, as it really seems like these Vista drivers just aren't cutting it right now.

Ummm.... Nvidia had the 1st multi-gpu on a single card, 7900GX2/7950gx2 anyone? Then ATi came out with the X1950 Pro Dual.
