Installation Cont...

Like we mentioned before, it is a good idea to take a quick look through the manual and another reason is coming up. The hard drive mounting is inverted. A miscolored drive looks really cheesy especially on something that is so aesthetically pleasing like the EZ65. AOpen takes a bit of a double edged approach with stealthed bays. The CDROM, floppy drive and the front panel connectors are all stealthed. In the case of the floppy and connectors, there is a push release mechanism that allows access. For the CDROM though AOpen takes a bit of a different approach; the CDROM attempts to line up to a mechanism on the case. The button on the front of the case is supposed to then push the plastic apparatus inside which in turns pushes the eject button on the front of the CDROM. The CDROM tray pushes open the stealthed door, the CD goes in, the tray closes and the stealthed door closes. In theory it sounds great but unfortunately it will not work with all CDROM drives.

On our test system we used a Samsung CDWriter/DVDROM combo. Attempts to line up the drive properly were unsuccessful. One notch put the drive too far back while the next one up held the bay door ajar. Even with the setup that had the CDROM too far out, the button did not seem to trigger the CDROM door. Another set of CDROMs that this will not work on are the Pioneer slot load DVDROM drives. I have not seen these for sale in North America for a while now but I have a couple of these drives at home and they are apparently still quite popular overseas. Without the tray door I do not think that the CD itself pushing on the stealth door is the best approach. Ultimately this is not a big deal as it is probably easier to find an optical drive that will work with the EZ65 more easily than it is to find an optical drive of that particular color.

The mechanism for opening a CDROM drive- the external button hits the square on the right which is supposed to press against the eject button
