AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Review - PAGE 6
William Henning - Tuesday, October 4th, 2005

Encoding

I found the LAME results fascinating. The raw CPU speed of the 3800+ overclocked to 2891MHz beat out the 4000+ at 2.7GHz with the higher memory bandwidth; yet more proof that MP3 encoding is CPU not memory bandwidth bound. The P4 670 does very well here too, no doubt due to its high clock rate and large L2 cache.

Compression

WinRAR is one of my favorite benchmarks; it is roughly equally processor and memory bound. The chart is dominated by Athlon 64's, with the overclocked 4000+ being the king of the hill.

The P4 670 does very well for MPEG2 encoding, even beating out an Athlon 64 overclocked to 2891MHz. The overclocked 4000+ still does quite well.
