Nice review, but these speakers are really POOR. I'm an audio engineer and my ears begged for mercy to pack them up in a box and send'em back to Amazon.com.

The VS series was meant to be economical from what I recall, for $60 on some sites I don't think there's much to be expected. They're a 2.1 upgrade over a stock 2.0 system. If you want something fairly nice for a bit more check out the MX-5021's (2.1) or the Logitech X-530 (5.1), they do a better job in comparison to the VS4121.

I am not an audio engineer, and I have asymmetrical hearing loss, but I love my 4121 s! They really open up the sound.

I don't know what the previous poster was thinking , but his hyperlink goes to a page that is so unorganized, and so busy that I didn't stay there long enough to figure out what was there that was helful.

hey guys, i bought a set of these a few days back, and they sound cool but the package was missing the Y-CONNECTOR, and the worst part is that alect support is of no help in this concern.

I like bass but these have too much, I have to turn the knobs all the way - and + too hear myself think. You can't hear them till you turn the knob half way. I am also missing the Y adapter- opened 3 more boxes they where also missing the part. Only paid $50.00 for them, nice looking speaker just too much bass and not enough clean sound. Thanks. S.

what y-adaptor are you talking about? I just picked up two sets of these speakers as BestBuy clearanced and there was no Y-adaptor, nor did I find a need for one. The speakers don't have as good a tonal quality as I'd hoped, but they'll do for 15 bucks each. Dual subs definitely helps and sub position and direction vastly effect overall balance; try moving them around a bit to see if this helps.

The Y Adapter is a stereo RCA to headphone converter. It allows you to hook up TV / Video game sources to your speakers.

I've had these speakers for a few years now, and they're alright. Volume at 33%, treble at 66%, and bass at 33% produces a nice sound. However, they have always seemed to be missing a bit of a 'punch' I think somewhere in the mid-range.

I'm thinking if I ever get my finances in check, I may check out Bose's 2.0 speaker system as a replacement.

really poor set of speakers. I have them since 1-2 years - really bad bass, theres no reason to go up with it because you'll lose your hearing. Very disturbing passive sound when nothing is played on them, I cant let them turned on when the computer is OFF because the noise sound is too high.

Something to note is that this review was put out in 2003, Altec Lansing has shifted owners a few times since that point, we haven't seen the newer VS4121's in action at all.

Didn't get the Y-connector either. Hi my name is Dennis and I'm from the Philippines . I'm one of those unhappy VS4121 owner. I inquired to Altec Lansing, asking if I bought a fake VS2141. They asked for a serial number but mine does not have one (Do you have one?). I took photos instead where the serial number is supposed to be so they could see. I also send photos of the circuit board, packaging, sub-woofer etc. After that no more e-mail from them.

I'm no audio engineer either. But I'm a television repairman. My co-worker who sits beside me handles audio. And I say that I'm exposed to various brands of audio equipment. Sure! the bass is great! Exessive even. But that's the only great thing about it. The mids is mediocre, and the highs is next to non-existant. Plus the anoying hum when there is no music. Even in the downloadable manual for VS4121 admits that there is a hum.

Altec Lansing did not tell me if mine was fake. But after hearing you guys complain the same thing, mine doesn't seem to be fake at all.

Serial number is located on the back of the sub woofer, check out this picture for the rectangular white sticker in the lower right area.

Really bad picture now that I look at the expanded view D; After the Platronics acquisition it's hard to say what the quality or consistency is. I know that many lines like the VS series turned to economy lines while they used what was left of the MX line as their hardcore focus.
