Since the release of the Sandy Bridge-E processors our labs have been overflowing with quad-channel memory kits, and today we putting a set of memory from Patriot under the microscope. Patriot sent over a DDR3-1600 kit of memory that is part of the Viper Xtreme series and as such utilizes a robust heatspreader design and a tight CAS 8 latency. However, unlike the other quad-channel modules we have examined thus far, the Division 4 memory kit doesn’t have a 1.5V power rating and instead uses the older 1.65V rating.
As a part of Patriot's new Division 4 series, the kit includes four 4GB memory modules are designed to support the Intel X79 platform and 2nd generation Core processors. This allows them to be used in conjunction with any X79 based motherboard, but they can also be used as a dual-channel kit on any AMD or Intel motherboard that supports DDR3 memory.
The 16GB Division 4 memory is hitting the street with an aggressive pricing strategy, as this kit has an MSRP of only $119.99. That is less than the DDR3-1600 CAS 8 memory kit we examined from Corsair, and only slightly more expensive than the CAS 9 models previously reviewed. So, from the start we know the price is right, but let’s get these into our test system and see if the performance is there as well.
