MidiLand S4 4060 Review - PAGE 1
Anthony Roberts - Friday, April 7th, 2000

MidiLand is back in 2000 with a new series and a new look. The S4 series, originally slated for release in fall 1999, is now finally making its way into retail channels. Long time multimedia audio enthusiasts will liken the MidiLand brand to quality and accuracy of musical reproduction. The new S4 series is not so much a successor to the respected S2 series, as it is an extension of MidiLand's multimedia family.

With the S4 series, MidiLand hopes to enable gamers and music lovers alike to enjoy quality, at a much reduced price. Toward that end, the company R&D has been able to come up with a few solutions to the cost factor of their speakers. The most notable change is the material used to construct the new satellite speakers - these new sats are smaller and lighter thanks to a material that MidiLand calls Platallic. The new material is designed to recreate the same structural and tonal qualities of a medium dense wood fibre(MDF) enclosure, at a much reduced cost. The result is a compact, lightweight satellite that is easily wall mounted and is said to have acoustic properties similar to a satellite made from MDF.

At the time of writing, the S4 series consisted of three main members: the S4 4060, a low cost, high quality alternative to the S2 4030, the S4 7100, a 5.1 speaker rendition of the 4060 with a beefier subwoofer, and the flagship S4 8200, a full blown 5.1 solution including a Dolby Digital decoder and full featured remote. Both the S4 4060 and S4 7100 systems use the exact same satellite, and both these systems target a different market. In this review, we take a look at the S4 4060 3 piece set, which retails for $99USD, but which can be found for around $80USD.
