Hi, this product is kinda interesting for a MD owner like me but how "better" is it from my current SBLive! + Digital I/O card? I'm using the SPDIF output which connects to the Digital Input of my MD player.

Now they got this analogue product and there are critisms, I'm kinda lost n confused....

The product AN1 is definitely better than an analogue recording from a sound card (Even from a high quality soundcard). Or at least that's my own opinion.

The problem you face is whether or not a digital connection on the sound card is better than an external device like the AN1 which actually forces you to record in analogue mode on the MD player/deck. If I were you, I would stick with the digital I/O for now, because I can't be certain whether or not the AN1's good performance was because it was isolated from the computer case. If it WAS due to that isolation, then that means the DG1 (which allows digital recording outside of the computer) would be an ever better solution than the AN1.

Does anyone have an idea with the DG1 will appear and approximately how much $s?

Also, what version of Windows is required for the USB Plug & Play Stuff to work correctly?

Actually I was hoping to see something more "specialised" for MD recording. Hope the DG1 gets released soon so we can all compare against using a soundcard digital SPDIF output.

There's another thing that I was pondering about, the output produced by the Digital I/O via the SBLive! isn't a true digital signal at all right? Its being converted from a digital format (MP3) to an analogue (SBLive! to Speakers) then back to Digital (Digital I/O card), so I'm guessing there's definately signal loss somewhere around the conversion.....

You need Windows98, or you need to get the USB extensions for Win95 (make sure you have all the service patches). I can't remember where to get the USB extensions for Win95, but I bet you can search for it at [link name=www.microsoft.com]www.microsoft.com[/link]

The DG1 is on the cusp of being released, and my guess is that it will be $20-30 more than the AN1 (don't quote me on this . Actually I'm a little excited about the DG1 as well, but I'm not sure if Xitel is sending us anything for review, because they say that the DG1 is identical to the AN1 in terms of quality of recordings. I'm going to push for it because I've been getting some emails on that too.

krank:

Regarding the SBLive + Digital I/O. I'm not sure I follow why the SBLive would do it like that. Doesn't the Digital I/O card connect to the SBLive directly? If so, then the SBLive will pass the music in raw digital format to the Digital I/O, which is then passed as raw digital format through the SPDIF. You don't get any D-A conversions until it hits the MD recorder (er... maybe not even then. I'm not too clear on how MD's record. I assume that the good ones can keep the signal digital and convert it to ATRAC directly like that).

PLEASE HELP ME! I just purchased a Sony MiniDisc Player, which came with the Xitel MD-PORT AN1. I can't select it (USB Audio Device) as the preferred device in the Multimedia Control Panel because it is not and option as my preferred device! I have Windows 98 FE, and i have taken some files from my laptop (Win 98 SE), to create the USB Audio drivers needed (hopefully, it is correct, it acts like it). My only problem is I can't select it. I'm so depressed about this whole thing. I have tried the MD-PORT AN1 on my laptop and it sounds so superb and crisp! The problem is my MP3s and everything I want to record is on my main PC. Can I download something anywhere? Order a CD? (I've been to Microsoft's site but the link to order the CD is dead).

[b]Please help me! ASAP!

Much Thanks!
