IJAM IJ-50 MP3 Player Review - PAGE 3
Anthony Roberts - Tuesday, July 11th, 2000

Close-Up of the IJ-50
The player itself is compact enough, like a stout cigarette box, but it isn’t going to really impress any of your friends with its second grade plastic construction and even lower grade chrome wannabe buttons. I was thoroughly unimpressed, having seen some Transformers toys with better construction. The buttons do not have a very tactile feel -sometimes it’s difficult for me to know, by touch, whether a button has been depressed. The unit also doesn’t have any audible indicators when you depress buttons (these “beeps”, made popular in Japan after the introduction of remotes for portable players, can be a nuisance, but they can also help in keeping track of whether the unit is responding to your controls). I found it aggravating that the play and stop functions were placed on two sides of a longish “rocker” type button, since the button did not work consistently during my testing. Aside from these complaints, the unit functions as advertised, and includes a hold switch to prevent accidental changes in your settings when you have this sucker in your pockets.

Close-Up on Black
Because the unit doesn’t have an LCD display, it uses a single red LED as its indicator. A solid red light indicates power, while a flashing red light indicates playback. That’s pretty much it. The included headphones are pretty funky looking with their “behind the head” design (a spin-off of Sony’s first such headphone design), and you’ll have no problems strutting down Broadway with a pair of these looped over your ears. Or you might, since they have a little too much “anime” influence in their color scheme.
