Sapphire and PowerColor ATI HD 4890 Review - PAGE 1
Kevin Spiess - Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 Like ShareATI's current generation of video cards is a very complete line-up: they have something to offer at every price-point. From the entry level HD 4350 to the behemoth HD 4870 X2, you might think they finally had all the bases covered -- but, it turns out this isn't the case. (You didn't think they were just going to stop making cards, did you?) Say hello to a new member of the HD 4800 series: the HD 4890.
You can think of the HD 4890 as a souped-up, turbo-charged HD 4870. While there have been some tweaks to the core of the part, which we'll go over on the next page, in many respects the HD 4890 is the next incremental evolution of the HD 4870: more speed is the largest difference between the two cards. Just how much more speed? We'll be figuring that out in today's comprehensive review, where we will compare the HD 4890 to 8 other video cards, and throw in some HD 4890 CrossFire numbers to boot.
Like NVIDIA's move from 192 shaders to 216 for the first and second version of the GTX 260, and the GTX 285 replacing the GTX 280, ATI is constantly trying to get a leg up on the competition in the fierce, fast and frantic world of video card development. As the sun slowly sets on this generation of cards -- now in April, we are fairly far into the HD 4000's product life-cycle now -- ATI have been applying all that they have recently learnt, into some final designs that will bear the HD 4000 series badge.
If you look at things this way, you can see the HD 4890 as the culmination of ATI's work on the HD 4800 series. Let's see if they are going to close the book on the HD 4000 series with gusto.

Hmm, the Powercooler version is going for £209. Very tempting
Any word on what this thing would or wouldn't do in higher card configurations? I know that Crossfire X was branded as a great solution but kind of tanked horribly when it came down to real world performance with performance falling flat in anything beyond 2 cards.
Regarding multi-card'ing, Over two cards in CrossFireX works better than Tri-SLI -- at least in my last testing. The third card gives you like a 20-25% boost when it works, while the fourth card gives you like 5-10%.
The thing is, you really don't need more than two cards IMHO. A GTX 295 or HD4890x2 or even a HD 4870X2 should be enough for anyone's gaming needs. It's an interesting question to wonder how , say 4x 3870's would compare in price-performance to like a HD 4890. I bet the single card would still offer far better price/performance, even though HD 3870's are so cheap now a days. HD 3870 x 2 might be a good way to go though...
The Boys with resource IT168.com have conducted the interesting experiment. Using graphic adapter ATI Radeon HD 4870, they pseudo HD 4890 have got by runaway. As adversary was chose adapter GALAXY GeForce GTX 285 Overclocking Edition, which has a factory runaway. The Frequency formula is 695/1500/2500 MHZ while standard frequencies form 648/1476/2484 MHZ. Thereby, in testing will be three participants pseudo HD 4890, standard on frequency GTX 285 and her(its) dispersed variant. Completing the test stand and list of the used plays in table.
Three technological demonstrate its positive attitude to GeForce GTX 285. Not even dispersed GTX 285 overtakes dispersed Radeon HD 4870.
World in Conflict
The Strategy World in Conflict once again reveals the leader on behalf of GTX 285. Begins be created impression that rumours about presence 960 stream processors in HD 4890 can be groundless.
Else two hits confirm that first place for GTX 285. However in play GTA 4 pseudo-adapter HD 4890 it is enough was close selected to leader.
Need For Speed: Undercover
But here is in play Need For Speed: Undercover capacity rival practically is.
As conclusion possible to say following. If the price ATI Radeon HD 4890 will really be within from $199 before $249 success to her is provided. But if amount stream processor beside HD 4890 all will is 960, possible sound competition with GeForce GTX 285. Though at price can be beyond the scope of $250.
I think he's blathering on about how the 4890 is just a boosted version of the 4870 (which is true, yes?). And how it is positioned as the rival to the GTX 285.
Runaway = Overclocking (Hence, 'factory runaway' = 'factory overclock'). I THINK he said that during an experiment, they (IT168.com) were able to produce a pseudo 4890 via overclocking.
Given time, I could re-translate this messed up translation work, but considering I don't have a lot of knowledge about GPU testing processes, I doubt I'd really be able to get it all done proper.
Essentially, it is pretty much an attempt by someone to get people to visit those sites by means of showing what they've been up to....
