Samsung 760V TFT LCD Review - PAGE 3
E L - Friday, May 24th, 2002

Image Quality

When all is said and done, the image quality of a LCD monitor will be the main factor in deciding on which LCD to purchase. My experience with Samsung’s products has always been good and the Samsung 760V TFT LCD compares favorably with the rest of its product line. Samsung’s products, both LCDs and CRT, have a reputation for quality displays at an affordable price. While writing this review, I tried using different fonts and font sizes to test out the clarity and crispness of the text displayed on the screen. Font sizes of 10 to 12 are probably the most commonly used text sizes for word processing documents and these are very crisp and clear. A font size of 8 was more difficult to see, but still viewable. One of the things that I found with this LCD was that it is extremely bright. I found myself lowering both the contrast and brightness to very low levels until the glare was reduced. This is a minor issue, but the high brightness/contrast comes in very handy in bright environments with a lot of natural sunlight. This LCD monitor touts a 400:1 contrast ratio, which is quite good for an LCD, compared to 300:1 that is common in 15” LCDs and even some 17” LCD monitors. However, I found that if you didn’t set the brightness to the level you are comfortable with, there is quite a bit of glare emitted, especially if you have many white backgrounds in your applications. I found the blacks on this panel decently black, and both black text on white backgrounds and dark colored text on dark backgrounds relatively easy to see. Images appear crisp and the color reproductions are good. Varying shades of dark appear to be relatively good, but I found that white shades on whites aren’t as good as they could be. I found it hard to distinguish shades of light colors that were close together. The response time is relatively good, but I still notice some trailing of images, or ghosting. In particular, when your display settings are set so that you can see the image of the window while you drag, as compared to just seeing the border of the window when you drag it around, you see the remnants. All LCDs have this effect; it just depends on how much trailing of images you see. In particular, the Samsung 760V is actually quite good, but it could still be better. The general color reproductions of this panel are quite good with a maximum color range of 16 million colors. Some test images created very high quality images. Finally, a quick visual inspection of the panel revealed very minimal defective pixels, which could be annoying if in the wrong position on the screen. I didn’t notice too many, just a couple. The viewing angles on this panel are at normal levels, though it could be better vertically. This would only be inadequate when there are many people looking at the screen, particularly when the viewer is standing. Finally, the brightness seems to be fairly even throughout the panel, even at the edges.

Conclusion

Overall, I found the Samsung 760V TFT LCD to be a well- rounded performer. The price of the unit and what it offers is a nice balance of needed features and good image quality. There’s also a nice blend of style and design built into the product mixed with a solid, quality construction of the entire unit. The LCD was easy to setup and install and the on screen menu for display settings were intuitive. Color reproductions and brightness/contrast will fulfill most users’s needs, though still not for high-end graphics which require much higher resolutions and color output. Though, this is not to say that it cannot meet the needs of the power user and the gamer.

Overall Score: 83%
