COMDEX Canada West 2001Report - PAGE 1
Daryl Grant - Thursday, March 15th, 2001

COMDEX is a haven for anyone and everyone interested in today’s computing technology. The COMDEX that just about everyone knows about takes place in Las Vegas – the most recent one was held in the Fall of 2000 and hosted around 2000 exhibitors. COMDEX Canada West, which is held in Vancouver, BC, is a much more modest event with just over 100 exhibitors. While not the gala event that we know of COMDEX Las Vegas, COMDEX Canada West still has some interesting presentations and displays, including a sweet Quake3 setup.

3Com

The 3Com Booth & their Home Wireless Gateway

3Com had probably the highest display out of the bunch. One of the cooler devices they were showing office was their Home Wireless Gateway seen here:

This gateway can share a cable, DSL or ISDN connection among PCs, printers and other peripherals – all wirelessly off course. The gateway works with any Wi-Fi certified client card. This device retails for about $350.

AOpen

The AOpen Booth

AOpen had quite a number of devices on display, including some of their motherboards and optical devices. Check out the “PinkLady” – a pink PCB version of their AX3S Pro – and the AX3SP which is on black PCB:

Orange Micro's Booth

Unfortunately the PinkLady is only available in Japan and the spokesperson we talked to informed us that they are already sold out. And I thought blue PCB was a hot ticket item… It looks like coloured PCBs are going to be the “in” thing for the next while. Wouldn’t it be cool if they could apply textured images to the PCB? Think of all the possibilities…

Orange Micro

On the more functional side of things, Orange Micro was sporting their new USB 2.0 and Firewire (IEEE 1394) interface cards. The coolest one was a USB 2.0 and Firewire interface combined in a single card that provides four 400Mb/s Firewire ports (3 external, 1 internal) and three 480Mb/s USB 2.0 ports (2 external, 1 internal). The USB ports are also USB 1.1 compatible so they can still be used for older USB devices. This card, along with their other USB 2.0 cards will be available in April 2001 – they should be the first manufacturer to have USB 2.0 cards for sale.
