In our initial round of benchmarks, we put the 6600GT up against ATI's X600, ATI's mainstream offering on the PCIe bus. The price point for both the 6600GT and X600 are $199. Nvidia is positioning the 6600GT as David in the battle against the Goliaths of yesterday, the 9800XT and Nvidia's own 5950 Ultra. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, benchmarks for the 9800XT and 5950 Ultra are not yet complete on our Intel system - the comparison is also not exactly equivalent as the 9800XT and 5950 are AGP based and will use DDR400 instead of DDR2-667. Look for updated benchmarks later this week.

As mentioned, we also clocked the 6600 GT down to 300/600. 300 Mhz is the targetted clockspeed for the standard 6600. Memory speeds again, are determined by the manufacturer. 600 Mhz was chosen as a nice conservative number for the memory speed. This is comparable to what was found on the 9600XT and 9600Pro as well as the 5900XT/SE based cards. The 6600 will feature GDDR instead of the GDDR3 found on the 6600GT so there will be some differences beyond the clockrate yet we will this should give a good ballpark figure of the performance that one should expect from the 6600.
