That guide looks pretty promising. use that! My dad is gonna use it to clean my ps2 lense.

EDIT: It worked! MY PS2 is now ultra capable of reading DVDs and it reads them really fast aswell!

Also Duke I occasionally have the same problem with my PS2 when I attempt to play FFXI.

What I usually do is turn it off and just restart everything.I'm glad I don't need CD's to play this game.

Great article, vegi. However, the second time I went to tweak the laser, the ribbon separated from the ps2 and remained connected to the cover when my puppy got ahold of it. Am I out of luck, or is there any way that I can either (a)reconnect it and get the buttons working again, or (b)manipulate the standby and eject capabilities in a different way? PLEASE HELP, I AM SUFFERING...thanks, bro
If anyone has any helpful information, it would be greatly appreciated if you shared it...thanks

For the last week, ever since i played offline SOCOM2 for a while my mic stopped working online. then the next time i went online, i detached my keyboard and it worked fine. but from then on, the mic wouldn't work. the light is on, and i can her the sort of pop/click of whatever when you click connect (the screen when you can select net setings) so it seems that the earpiece is working fine, but when I go online, in the game it will say down in the corner of how many people are on your channel it will say 1, 2, or 3. almost never any more. but I can see more than that number of people talking. I can't talk either.

Then, yesterday, I had a friend over to play some lan games and online. when we played online, He could talk where ever he wanted (in-game, not lobby) but I could only talk when I was in the same condition as him (eg. on the same team and either both of us dead or both alive)

after he left, i experimented a bit with having my ps2 hooked up to the first port on my router like he was when he was over and nothing different happened. the only thing I can think of is that my ps2 is old and needs to be cleaned, which it does, or the USB ports are almost shot. I have also been having problems with blank screens at startup, and those clicking noises from somewhere in the ps2 when I turn it on and it begins to read the disc, and offline (SOCOM). sometimes it won't load for 3 mins after I select a mission and then no BGM or character pics but the actual mission loads fine.

do you think this will fix my headset problems? I'm going to do it anyway though.

A guy at radioshack told me that all you need to clean the lens is a DVD lens cleaner because the only thing that should be on there that you'd have to clean is dust.

Hello, I fubared my PS2, I tried adjusting the cd laser pot, as it was having probs reading some backups, & the pot broke off & fell in the machine (never to be found again). So in this case now that it does not read cd's at all now (be very careful when adjusting the pots) I am on the hunt for a new laser unit (for a v1 ps2) I looked at the link provided in the tutorial to the ebay store, but I cannot afford (once converted) $50cdn. I can only spend a maximum of $20us including the shipping (due to my current financial situation). If anyone can point me in a good direction, a site, an auction, anything that would be awsome. Or if someone has a guide for fixing a broken pot that would be helpful to.

Thanks,

well, either you pay the 50 bucks or you can get a new ps2.
personally, i don't know, but i'd probably use this to buy a new PSTwo unless you need the HDD for FFXI or S2... like me...

Hi everyone,

I just joined the club. I have a little maybe a big problem that I don't think I can fix without getting help from someone with knowledge in this field. My apartment was struck by lightining about a month ago. Every single device was fried beside my PS2, at least that's what I thought. Because I didn't have a TV to try my PS2 I didn't know it was fried until I got a new TV. After the lightining I tried it out to see if there was power and it worked . It open the cd drive and took the cd in. Like I said though I didn't have TV so I didn't know if it was ok or not beside just power being on. I hope Iam not loosing you guys here. Anyway, I disasambled the consule all the way to the mother board, and looked at every single piece in there to find anything that's burned but I couldn't. Now I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestion. Thanks so much.

P.S. if you think you can help, you can email me at

My PS2 is in need of cleaning, but before I actually open it up and whatnot, I had a question. Namely, I've seen this thing you can buy in stores - it's a CD with this cleaning solution. You put a few drops on the CD, throw it in and its supposed to clean the lenses. Does anyone know if that works? I'd rather go with that than actually cracking the console open.

As far as I can tell, for me it's just a lens issue. Sometimes I'll get CD reader errors, more for some discs than others. Additionally, it won't run any PSX games anymore (haven't tried DVD or Audio CD lately).

UPDATE: I cracked open the console and used the guide to clean my lens, along with anything else that looked dusty. That fixed the problem entirely. I've already PMed my thanks to Vegi in private, but I'll shout him out here as well. He is undoubtedly "the man " - anyone who questions this truth should be shot.
