Alright everyone the upper section is a vital area you have the power board, the DVD drive, the controller port and heatsink for the EE in this area. Make sure that your console has had some time to rest without activity and power. If you just turned it off give it about an hour. The heatsink isn't a fun thing to get burned by and it's worth the wait. You can check back periodically on it but during that time make sure the power cable isn't plugged in.
Once you're sure it's ready to finally be opened proceed with caution. In newer models I hear a lot about cable damage to the ribbon that Sony uses in the console. Lift the back up slightly and slide the case away from the drive door as pictured below. You want to keep things relatively level when doing so as you don't want it getting unplugged. Once you clear the drive and controller ports tilt the case slightly up and to the right. This should expose how much slack is avaliable for the ribbon or wires to move. If there is a bit of slack to it then feel free to continue turning it to the right and either standing it in a vertical position next to the system or just flipping it over completely. You now are able to view the powerboard which is fastened down by 4 screws. In front of that is the heatsink for the main processors and in front of that are the control ports. The giant black box is the DVD drive unit. In most cases this is going to be where the focus is for repair.

Examine your drive. There should be 2 screws holding it down with a yellow hue to them. Leave these in. It holds the drive to the rest of the system. If you unfasten these and pull on the drive you're going to disconnect the cable from below and create another task to handle which I'll go into later just in case it does happen. Look and find 4 small black screws (may vary per model) if you have a magnetic screwdriver to get these then all the better. Otherwise watch your hands and attempt to tip these out by turning the console when you get each one unthreaded. Keep in mind it's going to suck putting the one by the heatsink and EE in. Once all are removed the cover may or may not wish to lift up. Do not pull on it until it rips off! The tab on the left as illustrated can be pulled out and then lifted to remove the top.

The exposed laser can be seen. At this point make sure all outside elements are away from the console. From here we'll go into the lens cleaning and the tray fixes. Depending on how the system was left there might be a game disc in there right now. Pick it up and place it back in the case. Lens Cleaning will start things up with a short bit on removal for those seeking to replace a dead unit and install a new one. Then Tray fixes will follow.

I think it would be a good idea to add peoples names that have successfully completed any of the procedures. That way others may feel more comfortable or pm those people for additional support.
I realize the steps are pretty detailed with nice images, but it can be an entirely different can of worms once someone opens up their PS2.
As much as I'd like to get all of the models to cover
I've only had the chance to work on my two consoles here so far. Sadly most send their consoles back to sony and pay the bill for them fixing it and I never get to try anything out.
Also I got a few emails from guests or people who wanted to be anonymous. I wont be going into detail on modchip removal or fixing a ps2 from a failed modchip install. Also I doubt I'll go into modchip installation since i'm working with not much at all over here.
This was a very informative article, it manages to cover the bases but it also goes beyond much more than the other guides I've read online, even right down to the power and laser replacement. Gosh, I never know you were so handy, Veg.
Adidas edit: Fixed spelling on my name and yeah let them read the guide instead.

I'm wondering what is the purpose of the 70% alcohol? With the higher potentcy does it work better.
Once again Vegi saves the day.
Glad it's working for everyone. Let the games & movies resume!
I don't know if I actually have that hiding around somewhere in my house lol, so I used water instead. Does it really make that big of a difference?
Thanks for the great guide!
Real quick question.
It's about soldering.
When cleaning my ps2 recently, i decided to take every damn peice o' the 'station apart. I found tons of dust caked in places obviously hard to access.
After cleaning (damn, this console version is shottily made), the whole thing, when putting it back together, I noticed one of the four wires coming from the CD tray (there's a white, orange, and red set), the white one was dangling off the little port that was connected to the motherboard. I barely touched the thing and just like that, the little port came right out. I freaked.
Obviously I put everything back together, save for that port, and tried booting a game. The screen ain't done nothing. Them little blue orbs that float around clumped, and stayed clumped, as one giant orb, and only the memory card browser would work.
Since that port was already half dead before i touched it, i'm thinkin' that was the problem with my DRE's the whole time. Anyhow, I am going to try to solder the damn port back to the motherboard, but have a quick question on soldering the metal part back to the board.
I don't know what type of solder to use? My dad's got a soldering gun, and some sort of solder, but I think it's lead based. Dunno if this is what to use with electronics or what, so i'm askin'. Should I ask at a hardware store, or does anybody know what type I should use? Any advice? Etc?
Pshhh..I got so pissed off. After cleaning all them areas, about 1 1/2 hours of delicate work, suddenly that damn port owns me.
