The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena Review - PAGE 1

Playstation fans can finally rejoice knowing that The Chronicles of Riddick has made its appearance on a Sony console after nearly five years of waiting.  The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena takes place immediately after where The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay left off players.  Luckily for us Riddick fans, Dark Athena also features a fully revamped Escape From Butcher Bay on the same disc.  This gives PS3 fans a great opportunity to catch up with the series, and Xbox stalwarts a chance to enjoy the series all over again on the improved 360 hardware.  It's by far the best feature of the whole disc.  In this review however, we will focus mainly on the namesake of the disc, Assault On Dark Athena.

The meat of the game starts out with Riddick and Johns deep in cryogenic sleep shortly after they have escaped from Butcher Bay.  Their ship gets boarded by a band of mercenaries hunting for anyone they can turn in for a bounty.  Johns is still knocked out and is captured by the mercenaries.  Riddick escapes and boards their ship, which is appropriately named Dark Athena.  Armed with only a hairpin and the shadows, it's up to you to break Johns out of the cell that he has been tossed into.

One of the first things I wanted to try out with Riddick is the eyeshine ability.  Who doesn't want to see in the dark?!  It's a nice feature that adds a bit of depth to the overall character.  The image is slightly blurry around the edges and gives it an eerie tone.  You spend a lot of time roaming through vents in this game and the eyeshine is utilized to make your way through the maze of ventilation shafts and corridors.  The vent system just so happens to have signs giving the player directions to areas, just in case strange people are wandering through the vents I suppose.  Unfortunately these signs are highly reflective and the eyeshine makes it nearly impossible to read without doing some funky positioning with the camera.
