I agree with most points in the review but definitely don't think the game is worth a rating of 7.4. I'd give it a 6.5 at best. If you extract each fundamental gameplay element and look at how The Saboteur have gone about it you realise it's pretty damn poor.

The stealth is atrocious and almost non-existent as you've quite rightly pointed out. May as well walk in with a rifle and just blast your way through everything because try all you like, you won't get anywhere being stealthy when you can't even walk past a nazi without him blowing his whistle. Even when you're dressed as one, and walking like one as the game suggests!

The driving: plain awful. All cars are incredibly alike and clunky, really heavy to handle and car chases are absolute pains. Getaways needlessly take forever, you'll get sick of them after the first one or two.

Shooting: again, awful. Nowhere near next-gen standards, and it offers absolutely nothing in the way of variety. A shot to the head wipes heads clean off, with horribly unrealistic blood splurting out which lets down the sense of realism I think the game was after.

Lastly, the game was graphically poor. Again, you'd expect this from a PS2 or the original Xbox, not a next-gen console. Even cut scenes look rough.

Basically, everything the Saboteur offers has been done in much better ways already. The only thing that might interest people is where the game is set, but even that doesn't save it. Definitely rent if you're intending to buy, it's not worth the full £35 it's currently going for.

PS: Not meaning to hijack, just giving my own opinions.

Guess I was smart not buying it. It really looks like a budget title, and like I can do much better. Might as well play Red Faction: Guerilla instead.

This is starting to sound like it's as repetitive as Assassin's Creed 1.

Yeah - forgot to add; missions are repetitive and I'm not even that far into the game. They're also horribly generic. 'Go pick this up from there and drive it to here' etc etc.

I actually really like it

I agree about not being able to walk next to a nazi without him going mental but in reality he would have realised who you are because no doubt your face is known.

I've had really good success taking them out on their own silently from behind.

The handling on the cars are shit but it doesn't really bother me that much. I just see it as a little fun shooter to blow shit up and drive around. I think if you don't expect too much of it you'll enjoy it more.

The entire setting is done in the 1940s. Cars back then don't handle like a Nissan 350z or any other modern day car. I think they nailed the cars in terms of handling. However, there is no car damage that I could really tell (not counting "bullet holes") until it starts flaming and then explodes and that's meh.

I haven't played a whole lot yet (just got past the race) but I think a 6.5 would be fair. I found the plot to be a bit boring compared to driving around on your own and killing generals, taking out search lights, towers, etc. The game reminds me of a mashup between GTA and Assassins Creed.

Can't say I disagree with your complaints.
However, I have played some pretty awful games, and The Saboteur has more going for it than said awful games.
That's why it has the score it has, anyway; I've always preferred to focus on the whole review more than the number at the end. ;D

Heh, true, but all the cars feeling exactly the same is just annoying imo. ;/

I haven't gotten very far but if all cars handle the same that blows.

I sorta stuck with the Altiair as soon as I unlocked it, nothing feels better than mowing down a few Parisians while slowly convincing yourself that everyone of them is somehow important to Thiery Henry...if your Irish that is .

EDIT: Also, Pandemic deserve great praise for The Saboteur as it was finished to a early deadline & mediocre budget. As well, how concerned would you be finishing a job you wouldn't recieve full pay for & know the sack is waiting for you once your done? So one can only remorse how much better this already decent game could've been.

Never know, might pull out for a sequel. As the man himself said;

Sean Devlin: "No, it's not over. I'm just getting started!"

From what I have seen of the story, it is terrible.

Provience: No one is nesicarily holding Pandemic entirely at fault here as I'm sure most know they recently shut down and probably didn't have the time or resources to make the game all it could be. We are talking about the game itself and the game only.

Yes that's why I'm pointing out that the game was unlucky as even though it is good if Pandemic had more time & money they would've made it even better.

I only just picked up The Saboteur for PS3, and I am thoroughly enjoying it, despite the hiccups mentioned in Lydai's review. As for stealth, I agree that it can get patchy, forcing you to run away and then come back to your objective several times before completion

I would agree with a 7.5 though my opinion is liable to change.
