What's New?
Of the three missions included with the game disk, the jungle mission is by far the most challenging and also the most innovative. Rogue Spear veterans will be truly impressed by the level design, realistic appearance of the jungle, and freshness of its gameplay. The other two missions are fairly bland, paling in comparison to the missions of Rogue Spear. Graphically, the jungle mission takes home a blue ribbon, while missions two and three get an honorary mention for their unimaginative design and lackluster content. Its almost as though the level designers were so exhausted after completing the jungle mission, that they lost wind when it came to designing the second and third missions.
Visually, Covert Ops missions maintain the high graphical standards of Rogue Spear, though the jungle mission has obviously had more work put into its physical appearance. Textures are excellent throughout the game, but there are still some very noticeable collision detection problems with polygons morphing into each other. This is particularly troublesome when you see your fellow teammate with the butt of his M-16 literally planted into his shoulder like a ceramic mold. Nevertheless, the graphics in Covert Ops preserve a level of quality every tactical game should be judged against.
There is no new equipment in Covert Ops, and there is in fact less equipment than the previous expansion Urban Operations included. Gone is the silenced sniper rifle so jealously guarded by your top snipers in Urban Operations. Youd think that a mission disk titled Covert Ops would at least include a silenced sniper rifle. The overly-bulky and inaccurate SAW assault weapon is also gone from the package, though it would have been a ton of fun to use on some of the smaller maps in Covert Ops.
Without any new weapons, there isnt much to say about the audio quality of Covert Ops, except that it remains unchanged from Rogue Spear. The introductory music has been adjusted ever so slightly, and continues to be the perfect musical score for the Rainbow Six series. All of the weapons in Covert Ops have identical sound to those in Rogue Spear, meaning that they all sound quite convincing.
