Pirates of the Caribbean Review - PAGE 1
Gabriel Vega - Saturday, July 19th, 2003

When it comes to games based off of current movies they're always hit and miss for responses from the masses. Sometimes this can be attributed to short playtime or just bad control systems or gameplay offerings. Bethesda the publisher commonly associated with the award winning series Morrowind has taken up the challenge of producing Pirates of the Caribbean for the PC and XBOX gaming platforms to go alongside Disney's release of the feature film. Without further delay lets break into the game and see how it holds up.

Jump back to the tales of European countries at war for dominance of newfound islands, pirates waging war on the seas and a Captain of the Victory seeking to survive and finish as the last one standing. While the last part may have not been part of the times it is now as the player takes control of the Victory and sets sail through 8 islands containing random treasures and outcomes to how the game plays. As a wandering soul on the waters the game leaves the player to maintain a crew, ship, international relations, and other key elements to surviving in the seas. If the player fails to keep the crew happy throughout their time on the ocean then they can count on having to re-think their strategy as they can and will revolt if not satisfied. If they go on a killing spree in a fort then they can also expect harsh treatment upon their return including cannon fire from the fort itself. The possibilities go on and on from there thanks to places like pirate forts with people equipped to return favorable relations.

Once you actually get going into the game you can observe various things about the character abilities and the options to their expansion. The character can earn points to increase leadership, attack power, ship firing accuracy and specific abilities as well such as fencing, boarding and ship defense. These add up in battle on ground and in the sea, without proper leveling sailing can be a complete nightmare as many pirates and ships roam the sea just looking for a fight. Maintaining stats, the crew's mood and the ship becomes essential and can actually benefit overall abilities without having to spend points on them. The game uses this to force the player to keep a balance over their behavior as a balanced crew can lead to easier takeovers or attacks with faster reloading or more experienced sword fighters.
