Introduction
Any review that you will read of this game will tell you that this is a wonderful and revolutionary product. Every review I have ever read of Metal Gear Solid praised the game to death, and rarely had anything bad to say. I honestly feel that the only reason that this occurred was because of the fact that the first several reviews of it were so horribly positive, that no other reviewer wished to give it a negative review for fear that his opinion would be discounted as heresy or nonsense. Well, I feel that it is my duty as a professional PC game reviewer to state my honest opinion, and to do anything else would be to rob my readers of a necessary and valuable commodity; the truth. In this review I will show and explain to you why I feel the way I feel, and I will also back up my often harsh accusations with examples that I found while playing the game. Since I couldnt believe how much I disliked the game that everyone so whole-heartedly lauded, I decided to play it while a friend of mine who was a fanatic of the Playstation version watched. He has even gone so far as to beat MGS many times on the hardest difficulty setting, so I felt that he would be perfect in aiding me in comparing this game to its console roots. I figured that if he loved the Playstation version so much, he should absolutely drool over the new PC release. To my amazement, he felt the exact same way as I did: While this game may have been revolutionary on the Playstation, it has now entered the PC realm, which is a whole different ball game.
Fresh off of their sensational Playstation sales, Konami partnered with Microsoft to bring what was arguably one of the best Playstation games to the PC. After a mild facelift, and a few enhancements to the game, it was repackaged along with the VR Missions add on, and sent off to the pc gaming community.
Let me start of this review by saying that if you own the Playstation version, there is absolutely no reason to go buy this game. The slight enhancements to the graphics do not in any way justify the price. I own both versions now, and I found this game to be superior and much more user friendly on the Playstation.
The story for this game is the same as that of its Playstation counterpart. Former members of the counter terrorist group FOX-HOUND have taken over a nuclear testing facility in Alaska. They threaten to launch a nuclear warhead from a brand new and top-secret black op weapon that they managed to secure during the raid. A green member of the current FOX-HOUND team was sent in to stop the terrorists, but things took a turn for the worst, and now she is being held prisoner along with several key officials. The most important of which being the president of the arms company that constructed the super weapon. As Solid Snake, one of the finest soldiers ever known, you have been called back to active duty in an effort to remedy the situation. You are to infiltrate the base, rescue the hostages, deactivate the super weapon, and for the most part, save the world.
