Overhaul Games is finishing up work on MDK 2 HD for PC, an updated version of the cult action classic, this following the previous May release of the Wii version of MDK 2. Like that version, MDK 2 HD features revamped play styles for each character and modern controls, but this time, better audio, and more obviously, significantly improved graphics.
To determine if it'll be worth your $14.99, we've recorded videos and screenshots from the original game and the HD version for the purposes of comparison. See them below (watch the videos in 1080p for the full effect).
Shiny entertainment
As you'll see, lighting, textures, and audio are all significantly improved. MDK 2 didn't look too shabby to begin with, though; honestly, MDK is the one that really needs the new coat of paint, though as fate would have it, it wasn't feasible. Phillip Daigle, producer for digital distributor Beamdog (where the game will be exclusively offered), says that's not to imply it couldn't happen, though.
"To bring MDK1 to life on modern platforms would have been almost an entirely new game. Kurt wasn't even a 3D character in MDK1, he was merely a 2D sprite - not to mention most of the 3D models and level geometry that did exist looked pretty terrible at high resolutions. To make it look good today we would have had to recreate everything from scratch. And because MDK is a bit of a lesser known series, it was felt that the cost compared to potential sales would have been too high. If MDK2 HD proves to be popular, Interplay may be interested in remaking MDK1, and we'd love the opportunity, but it's really up to them."
MDK 2 HD will be available on Beamdog as of October 12.
