Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2 Review - PAGE 3

Combat system, Weaponry, and Armor

Heavy Metal: FAKK2 employs an interesting two weapon fighting style. Larger weapons are two handed, but it is possible, even desirable, to wield a weapon in each hand. The inventory system is somewhat unconventional, but this is dictated by the two weapons style. There are six categories of weaponry - swords, slings and shields, guns, explosives, big guns, and inventory. Selecting a weapon usually involves selecting the category, then repeatedly pressing that button until the desired weapon is highlighted. The next step is to click with either left or right mouse buttons to decide with which hand to use the weapon. It takes some time to adjust, but this system usually works. The one situation where this is difficult occurs when you're trying to run, shoot, and change weapons all at the same time. Julie cannot shoot while switching weapons; she'll just end up selecting the wrong one.

Swords makeup most of Julie's melee weapons. There are five different swords and one giant axe. Except for the chainsaw sword's chainsaw mode, they do not require ammunition, which makes them desirable for dealing with small creatures and/or pests. Swords can only be wielded with the right hand. Two swords, in particular, require Julie to have a minimum amount of water before their special powers activate. Julie can perform weapon combos when she is wielding a one-handed sword. These combos are pre-programmed and are based entirely on what armor Julie is wearing and what she has in her left hand. They inflict increasing damage with each successive blow and are great to watch.

Julie has a sling with three different types of ammo. There is an infinite supply of regular ammo, which can be used to knock down fruits and other goodies from hard to reach places and knock out Shglieks. These small furry creatures (think of a cross between a squirrel and a hamster) can then be picked up and thrown. They make great distractions and feed the oversized Venus flytrap plants quite nicely.

Other weapons of note include the thermal detonators and the uzi. Thermal detonators don't do much damage on their own, but placed next to volatile materials like creeper dung, they make quite a bang. The uzi can be dual-wielded when a second uzi is found. It eats ammo like there's no tomorrow, but there probably won't be one if you don't use them. The majority of the big guns have two weapon modes, one for each mouse button. They use different ammo and both are quite useful. All in all, there is a significant overlap in ammunition types, and this is very helpful. The basic ammunition that Julie will find lying around all over Eden include bullets, plasma, gas, and rockets. Unfortunately, this means that when one of these is exhausted by one weapon, all other weapons using that ammunition are also out. All together, there are 19 weapons to choose from.
