Very fair review, I'm really not keen on the reboot myself, but I find myself looking forward to DmC tomorrow, err, today. The last time I was truly excited to play a game on day one was Arkham City, heh. Enjoyed the demo, though these voices, and characters overall, just didn't work for me. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but I miss the previous Dante/Vergil/gang.

Least I'll have fun with the fast-paced gameplay.

WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH BACKUP. A 7/10? A 7/10?

A review that isn't defensive, critical of the fan backlash, actually goes about reviewing the GAME rather than why Tameem did such a good job, and doesn't make comparisons as to why previous DMC games where the worst thing ever and why this change needed to happen?

A fair review that breaks down the gameplay and story for what it is and reviews the game in it's own right without trying so hard to convince Anti-DmC fans why they should get it but instead the average joe why this game is worth it's time?

I don't know if I should tip my hat or do the Tupac sign of "RESPECT YO". Which is more appropriate?

Despite my hatred for Ninja Theory and this games existence, I can admit that as an action game everything you need is there and certainly good. The combat, while slower is tight, the story is just as stupid as previous DMC games except in a less indearing, completely immature way. The level design while very restrictive and DMC2 heavy is gorgeous for the punk setting it's trying to convey and the music is godawful. For the average joe (Capcoms target audience) this game will more than meet their needs. I'm just so goddamn tired of yet another game abandoning the fanbase for more average joes, if this is current gen I don't wanna know what next gen is gonna be like.

That said of all the reviews I met this is one of the extremely few that isn't extremely defensive to downright delusional or focuses too much on Ninja Theory or Tameem instead focusing on what really matters, the game. I could smell the payoffs from the IGN review a mile away.

Still, hat tipping or tupac respect sign?

"No, not very compelling at all; in fact, it’s downright juvenile."

..unless it's serious for a moment. In other words, it's 100% DMC?

Actually previous DMC games where cheesy and over the top, for older fans you could enjoy this but the new games excessive use of..."Shakespearean" language makes it only attractive to teenagers and kids who thinks swearing is cool.

I don't mind the complete make over of the protagonist, but his attitude, and the things he says....the guy needs a punch in the face

Hm, not quite. There is definitely a gap between the two games and how they present themselves and their humor. DmC was just too much at many times.

SHAKESPEAREAN AND SOPHISTICATED STORY. But yeah this is leagues trashier than original non-canon DMC, oh and Dante/Vergil aren't complete evil assholes in the non-canon series (what they did to Mundus' child).

But at least it's edgy...right?

Ded Valve Video made my sides split. It's tragically accurate.

Totally broke the article page though.

Sorry to burst your bubble but according to Tameem this isn't a genuine review. Your supposed to give it an 8/10 for it to be genuine.

Afaik DMC always had issues in this area. Cheesy and immature jokes/story, no one ever complained until now...

Do people finally come to realize how bad they are? According to Saints Row: The Third reviews, no they didn't. It has one of the worst storyline i ever seen in a game in my entire life, neoseeker gave them a 9/10. So did most websites... v.v

At least i get a good game out of DMC. I admit it won't be AAA product but its gonna be something i'm gonna enjoy.

Really, the game only wants you to have as much fun as humanly possible, and everything about it was designed for this sole purpose
Sounds familiar?

I honestly think the 7/10 is just fine. Great review.

Rey Read the DmC review a little more carefully. Self-awareness and identity are the issues here.

The problem with DmC, unlike say classic Devil May Cry or even Saints Row: The Third, is that it doesn't quite settle anywhere. Both of the other examples certainly don't try to convince you they're very serious, and their humor is wholly intentional. With either, you know that they mean to be funny, and they're practically parodies of themselves.

This isn't the case with DmC. It tries too hard to be edgy, to the point where all the swearing is no longer crass humor -- it's just crass. Doesn't make you laugh so much as make you cringe. At multiple points in the game, I wondered, "Wait, so am I supposed to be taking this game more seriously?" I genuinely was not convinced until the latter half that, yes, this game wants to be taken seriously, but it won't quite allow you to do that with all its badly timed swearing and innuendos. Nuance is in the writing.
quote Rey
Sounds familiar?
I know what I wrote. Now that you mention it, though: damn, I actually liked the Saints Row characters more than DmC's cast. (Vergil was still a complete cutie, even if he was also halfway to being a sociopath.)

Edit: I'd also like to point out that there are clearly other reasons (stated in the review) I rated this game the way I did.

Should of made myself a bit more clear, wasn't directed to your review. You did a great job.

I was referring to the video and people complaining how bad the game is.

"Doesn't make you laugh so much as make you cringe."
Exactly what SR3 did to me

I'll be ranting after i get to play the game on PC. Until then i speak out of place.

I apologize if i sound like an asshole, i guess i'm just a tryhard dmc fanboy.

The point of Saints row was to be over the top, silly, zany just as the point of non-canon DMC is to be stylish and all sorts of cray cray.

When your reviewing the story of Saints Row and the story of a game like The Walking Dead or Heavy Rain and you gave both games (in terms of story) the same score thats because you HAVE to review these stories differently. Mainly one two things, "does this story take itself seriously and is it a big part of the game?" or "is gameplay here taking precedence over story and is the story taking itself like one big joke and if so is it an enjoyable joke?"

The secondary purpose of this reboot (other than to make as many sales as resident evil rofl) is to make a cohesive narrative that takes itself seriously for once and surpass the story of it's predecessors. However the same Ninja Theory that "doesn't care" about fans is the same one that caved in and radically changed Dante and the story late during development sprinkling a serious EDGY and shakespearean story with one liners, humor and potty jokes which come off as contrived, pointless and downright horrible just to try and please previous DMC fans.

Especially when you consider the fact that the new DmC sacrificed gameplay for an edgy and serious story that does take itself seriously only be a story that only 13 year olds can find cool. After all who else loves dick jokes? Besides HunterKiller666

They tried to cater to the Western audience...but as Ded mentioned, the target seems to hit those rare young teens that like this punk/serious style. Is this what Japan/England thinks of us? @_@

Finally beat the game over the weekend, was out of town. Decent enough, but the story is quite a setback. They put a lot of focus in it, and the story, to me, is easily the weakest part of the game. The backstory was nice, I liked the focus on Punkte's past, but the later missions...ugh.
