Introduction
Breakneck brings together the best qualities of an Arcade racer and combines smooth & detailed graphics, a multitude of different cars types, and a lot of exciting tracks all into one package. The premise of the game like many racing games is to come out ahead of the competition. Breakneck offers the gamer different ways of accomplishing this.
Breakneck offers the gamer two different modes of play; these are the Arcade and Expert modes. Within the Expert mode two other modes of gameplay lay hidden. The two sub modes are deathmatch and foxhunt. Deathmatch is the only sub mode that Arcade has to offer. The Arcade mode allows you to race vehicles without having to earn them as it is done in Expert mode.
When playing the Arcade mode, the player is able to race all 43 vehicles on 24 different racetracks. This selection of tracks is found in the Expert Mode as well, but instead of choosing a single race, the player chooses one of 16 pre-determined paths or seasons, where the player must work his/her way through, purchasing newer cars from their winnings. The 24 different tracks are all beautifully modeled and detailed, and include the option of racing in a mirror version of the track as well as one allowing the gamer to race the track backwards. The German developers at Synetic must be given credit for creating such beautiful backgrounds found in each track. Because each track uses upwards of 60,000 polygons, one would expect this sort of detail. Each track is set in a particular location in the world, you will notice environments that are based on popular stereotypes. Having the Pyramids of Egypt in the background is a nice artistic touch, but it does little to improve the gameplay.
Arcade mode is well suited for times when one wants to pick up a steering wheel and go for a quick race. Arcade mode also provides the opportunity for the player to gain the
necessary experience with the game's cumbersome layout and operations. Paying respects to some of the great arcade action games of yore, such as Spyhunter and RC Pro AM, Breakneck features the ability to load your vehicle up with weapons and litter the track with ammo and various power-ups, this mode of play can be triggered in both Arcade and Expert mode. This allows you to blast the cars off the road that may present you with a problem. Its a fun idea to toy around with, and definitely adds another dimension to gameplay.
