Batman Vengeance PS2 Review - PAGE 1
Romy Ilich - Tuesday, January 15th, 2002

Introduction

Based on Paul Dini and Bruce Timm's TV series, Ubi Soft's Batman: Vengeance is the best Batman game in years. The whole animation style and presentation has been brilliantly created to give you the feeling of being inside one of the series’ episodes with its re-constructed 3D environment of Gotham City and over 40 minutes of gripping cinematics featuring the original voice cast of TV's The New Batman Adventures.

This story begins, as our hero has to rescue a woman named Mary Flynn who has been tied up beside a bomb. Later he finds out that the Joker has kidnapped her son and is demanding five million dollars as a ransom. But as it turns out, the woman was Harley Quinn. The scheme was to kill Batman, however it backfires when the Joker is thrown from the Gotham City Bridge. Is he really dead? Well, our Caped Crusader has no time to worry about him for at that same moment his other arch enemies Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy each has their own plans under way. Apparently the whole thing was one of the Joker’s devious plans to frame Batman and destroy Gotham City. Can he prove his innocence and safe the city before it burns to the ground? It’s your job to help him do it.

Sound

The music was perfectly done to match the situations playing out on the screen with the dramatic highs and dynamic tension and the amazing sound effects like the spectacular explosions all provided in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. And, of course, not to forget the talented voice cast of Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as The Joker, Michael Anasara as Mr. Freeze, Bob Hastings as Commissioner Gordon, Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Alfred, and Tara Reid as Batgirl, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. All in all, Ubi Soft Entertainment did a very good job in creating the exact look and feel that you would expect from the series.

Graphics

The graphics are stunning. Gotham City looks magnificent, complete with red skies, comic book architecture, blinking lights everywhere, rampant dark streets, impressive gargoyles, grand arches, and modern day neon lit buildings that are found throughout the game. The characters are exceptional and very well rendered. Batman with his huge square jaw, squinty white slits for eyes, and his sort of angry look on his face. The Joker with his sharp chin, purple jacket green shirt and white face. The Iceman with his bald head, thin neck and evil red eyes. They all have been perfectly designed to resemble the cartoon show.
