Bang! Gunship Elite Review - PAGE 3
K. Lee - Monday, August 14th, 2000

Gameplay

Gameplay is smooth and echoes a classic game called Descent. Since your star ship is fully maneuverable, pilots can fly a complete three hundred and sixty degrees. The standard number keys, like in all three-dimensional shooters, are used to access the different weapons. All of the controls are easily accessed by the gamer, with many useful features that enhance the game. The gameplay is fast-paced with a lot of intense action for fans of the three-dimensional genre. Gamers can have the use of shields during the game, which regenerates after each use. An additional characteristic of the game is the targeting radar at the bottom of the piloting screen. This indeed is useful for finding enemy bogies that are within the pilot’s weapons range.

Some superior characteristics that this game features, makes it stand out when compared to other space simulators. The advanced physics model that Bang! Gunship Elite deploys brings about realistic gameplay. For example, when gamers accidentally hit a flying asteroid or ship, their spacecraft takes on a substantial amount of damage. This adds to the suspense in the gameplay and creates an edgy feeling for gamers when piloting through a hoard of space debris. The second feature that boosts gameplay, is the turbo function used when piloting these crafts. With the added speed, piloting an offensive attack is more furious and enjoyable at the same time. Gameplay excels with just these two features alone.

The one main fault that gamers may have with Bang! Gunship Elite is a minor aspect in the graphical detail. Blowing up an enemy ship and flying through the debris is a heightening experience. The graphical detail could not be better, however there is one flaw with this graphical scenery. When destroying a ship from a distance, the pieces of the ship destroyed are strictly two-dimensional triangles. Although this is a minor annoyance in the game, since the other graphics are fairly well done, the developers could have spent some more time on this facet. It would definitely improve on gameplay, and in turn improve on the replay value.
