Good review. Got to be the first good score I've seen given for the game, you really think the other reviewers weren't justified in giving it a 2/10 or 5/10?

Sounds like a neat game though, I love the espionage genre. I might have to give this a look. ^^

I know about the Destructoid review...you can't take them seriously anyway.

We're not big on scores anyway but...I would say a 5/10 is going too far. Unless it's version differences (platform specific, early code, etc). But the version I played...yeah. It's just a good game. I could understand a relatively low score I suppose, but...I just really enjoyed it and can't wait to get playing again. As I said, there are flaws, I just don't think they're terribly important.

I know RPG Gamer gave it a good score, and they're one of my favourite and most trusted sites.

As I said in another thread, I suspect a lot of people are just reading a couple reviews and then jumping on the hate train. Which is ridiculous cause if they'd play it themselves and make up their own minds, they'd see it's a lot of fun. Also, some seem to not get how certain things work in the game, like hacking, character customization, etc. And there's probably a few really anal retentive people who care far too much about the weaknesses. Finally, some reviewers seem to have not played much of the game at all...it definitely gets better as you go on, though I enjoyed it from the start.

I like this quote from the RPGWatch forums:

quote
A lot of reviewers seem to be blowing the flaws out of proportions while subduing the virtues, which is btw the exact opposite what they do when it comes to "true" AAA titles like Mass Effect and co.
For the record, I love Mass Effect and many big titles, but I feel pretty strongly they deserve about as much criticism as Alpha Protocol. Point is, the weaknesses in all are not really worth bitching about when you could be enjoying yourself instead (still aware of the weaknesses, not ignoring them).

Also this:

quote
I would say most of the people complaining heavily expected something shooter with rpg. It's really more of an rpg with rough shooter mechanics.
Gamers in general seem very rigid in their expectations -- if something is not how they expect it, it's automatically bad. It's fitting the game has received mixed reviews, then, as it tries a lot of new stuff in a very fresh combination. I couldn't care less about genre really, so it's probably fitting I took to it without preconceptions in mind.

K, I'm done now...almost wrote another review, haha.

I've been playing the game for about a week and I'll tell you flat out that the game is top notch work in my books,it met all of my expectations and more. The conversation system is smooth and even on my 3rd play-through i still run into things that make me say "damn didn't expect that to happen".crappy reviews be damned, that's why i came to neoseeker to get a good honest review

Nice review, very informative. Is it worth buying new, or should we wait for a price drop?

I agree completely - see my comments on the other thread. People are concentrating on the graphics etc but the actual gameplay is great and the conversation system is far better then ME2. I love how your decisions shape the game - In my first playthrough I didn't even meet Sie at all! I love the fact that if you let people live/die it can have a real effect on the game.

It has it's faults but to be honest ME2 was a real let down for me. It looked great but there was no replayability - I played it a sceond time but with no enthusiasm whereas I'm loving AP second time round.

AP definately gets better once you are past Saudi - although it's still a great game before that.

Good job on the review dude, I was waiting to see what the general consensus was on this game then make my decision. I reckon I'll pick it up a give it a go (I can trade in some games to) softens the blow as I'm tight on money this month

So you'd reccomend a buy or a rent? I was interested in this early on because Obsidian made one of my favorite sequels with KOTOR II but after reviews I kind of shrugged it off. So it's good?

I was disappointed in this game, but perhaps I had too high expectations. But there were a number of elements that didn't make great design sense, and they relied way too heavily on copying Mass Effect IMHO.

Still though, I'd give the game pretty much around what Sean said... I dunno; I'd rate it a 7.8 or something. Having a lot of fun with the game myself.

I thought that Destructiod review was way frickin ridiculous myself. There is no way this game is 5/10 or less. 6/10 maybe you could justify, but not much lower..

It's good if you're not neurotic. If you're neurotic, it's bad. Haha. I recommend a buy, but if you're still feeling unsure, rent first.
I think for various reasons reviewers overemphasize flaws and kind of gloss over the really good aspects. This seems to only happen with games that are not heavily promoted, and the opposite occurs with games that are. As I said, Mass Effect does a similar thing but has that final layer of polish. For me, Alpha Protocol is still a good game worth buying despite lacking that last layer. And hopefully they'll come out with a great patch or two soon to at least bring it close to that level.

I dont know I'm going to wait till thisone receives a price drop. I'm not really a fan of renting games as I like to add them to my collection but I dont wanna risk the 60 bucks. Maybe once it's down to 30 or something but 2010 is shaping up to be too good a gaming year to risk my cash.

The problem with this game is that it was suppose to be something new and bring something dynamic to the industry, but it did not. Having said this, Alpha Protocol is a solid game in my opinion, it just doesnt stand out. If you are tight on money, wait for it to come down in price, it is worth $40, but you may be disappointed if you buy it for $60 and expect something just AMAZING. Glad I bought it personally, but to each his own.
