Star Trek: Armada Review - PAGE 5

The Federation

Playing as the Federation allows for the most balanced gameplay between brute force and scientific ability. The Federation has its share of powerful ships, but unlike the Klingons, not everything they construct is designed for the specific task of killing things. There are several weapons that are designed for defense, including a shield re-modulation that reflects the enemy’s weapon back upon itself. The units of the Federation aren’t too valuable, and unfortunately, you are unable to build the higher-level units of the Federation before you move to the Klingon campaign.

The Klingons

The Klingons are a bloodthirsty people, who find war as a means of ensuring their place in their own form of heaven. To die in battle is a great honor, and to live a coward is a fate worse then death. Many of the Klingon ships have the ability to cloak, but this is not as useful as it sounds. A ship that is cloaked (save one prototype) cannot fire, and can still be detected via tachyon detection fields. Generally, I found the best way to win is to build several fleets of the smaller Bird of Prey, and then swarm the enemy. Also, it should be noted that the Klingons have the ability to form landing parties which can board enemy vessels and kill their crew via a specialized pod that attach to other ships. Of course, once the boarding party has successfully commandeered a vessel, that ship is then added to the Klingon's fleet.
