Star Trek: Armada Review - PAGE 1
Drew Wilson - Monday, May 15th, 2000

Introduction

Captain’s log: Supplemental. The Borg have launched an offensive against the alpha quadrant that threatens our very existence. They are moving en masse towards our sector, and I fear that nothing can stop them. Somehow they have managed to resurrect Locutus to lead the offensive. My mind is becoming blurred with his thoughts and the whispers of the collective. Their hive mind sounds like the death knell of the Federation. We must destroy them; we must win. The Klingons are involved in yet another civil war, and Commander Warf is on leave in order to prevent the Chancellor from being usurped. Hopefully his mission will succeed, for the Federation is in dire need of help. To compound the problem, the Romulans are performing surreptitious acts yet again, and I sense that their actions may have something to do with the movements of the Borg.

Errata

Before I truly get into this game, I will mention some of the numerous bugs that really put a hamper on my reviewing. First of all, I have actually had this game for over a month now, and unfortunately I have been unable to play it due to a glaring bug which prevents anyone with an Nvidia based graphics card (a very large percentage of the gaming community) from playing this game. Finally a fix was released for the game in the form of a beta patch. This fixed the problem for myself, and my friends as well. Once I was finally able to play this game that had been gathering dust for so long, (I had just returned from Star Trek: The Experience at the Vegas Hilton, so I was really determined to play this game) I noticed another error that some could argue is even worse than the total lack of ability to play. This horrible entity comes in the form of not having the ability to progress to the next level if you start the game off of one that you had previously saved. The game only allows you to finish the current level that you are playing, then presenting you with the level selection screen, which noticeably lacks the next level in line. This was quite frustrating, and it was not just happening to me. I play tested this game on a few of my friends’ machines, and discovered that this was not an isolated event. Thus I was forced to begin a level and play it in its entirety, without being able to save in case of a computer crash or enemy invasion. This bug was quite frustrating, and it hampered my experience with the game.
