Planescape Torment Review - PAGE 4
Timur Dykhne - Tuesday, April 11th, 2000

Next we come to experience points (EXP), the guiding light of most RPGs. EXP is handled differently in Torment than in other RPGs. While most RPGs reward you with most of your experience from bashing baddies and very little for solving quests, Torment gives you roughly 70% of your total EXP from solving quests. This is a great change for people like me who are tired of the tried and true "fight, rest, repeat" method of getting EXP that is so common these days.

Although the game uses the same core engine as Baldur's Gate, there are quite a few graphical refinements to keep the game interesting. The first thing BG veterans will notice is that the camera has zoomed in a bit. The closer view is a double edge sword; the characters and items look bigger, more animated, and in general, superior to BG, but it also limits the player's view as to what is going on in the surroundings. Since the resolution doesn't go beyond 640x480, there is little you can do to improve this flaw. This view is the main reason why missile weapons are not a standard you can train in and use, and why Nordom (ironically, your most useless ally) is the only one who has a distance attack. Aside from that minor problem, though, the graphics are great! The new spell effects look better than those of BG, and all of the areas brutally convey such dread that you want the Nameless One to finish his quest to rid himself of this misery.
