Evolva Review - PAGE 5
Justin Bracken - Monday, June 19th, 2000

Gameplay Cont'd

The types of enemies you face in Evolva range from the standard spider-like creatures, to massive end bosses more reminiscent of console games. Each of the enemies has its own unique method of attack, giving you the opportunity to appropriate their respective genes for mutation. All of the parasitical creatures have a distinguishing appearance, to go along with the suitable and sometimes creepy sounds they make. The only thing lacking with the enemies in Evolva is that despite their originality, a larger variety would have made it more interesting in later scenarios. After spending some time in the first few missions, you can accurately predict what is hiding around the next corner. Or, in other words, anyone with arachnophobia should probably stay away from playing Evolva.

Indigenous life consists of a small handful of truly original creatures that appear as innocent victims. Most often you’ll find them grouped together in certain areas, but they will stampede or even attack when threatened by the Parasite or your Genohunters. As with the enemy creatures, a larger variety of indigenous life forms would have made the game less predictable. For example, while the native species play a significant role early on, they are all but non-existent in later missions.
