Nemesis of the Roman Empire - PAGE 1
Gabriel Vega - Friday, March 12th, 2004

Many wish they could relive the days of the roman empire, creating warriors and capturing lands to better the status of the empire. Often games try to deliver this wish in their various forms but often the gameplay lacks or the control is too restrictive to be enjoyable anymore. Nemesis of the Roman Empire is a title that attempts to make itself distinct from the rest of the titles on the market, instead of using limited command over groups and simple outnumbering. Players are forced to step it up a notch and manage funds, food, farms and captured lands.

While for many it seems like a simple task, attend to general needs to just break even and make a large amount of troops to solve conflicts. This isn't the case at all. Large amounts of troops are good if they're properly balanced and leveled up. A giant mass of level 1 warriors will do little if any damage compared to an army of Level 5 enemies. Also leveling up is no simple task, gold and food are required to maintain large armies, food has to be harvested from your lands to meet the demands of the troops before their health starts to fade after long periods with no food.

The game breaks out of many limited boundaries, the engine allows for large squads of troops to be launched in a simple mouse click, no longer are moves made 9 at a time until everyone arrives at the prep point. This makes gameplay so much easier as less time is wasted to attain a single result for a move. Game AI takes action once enemies start attacking or advance your troops. Don't rely on this entirely though as a small roadblock often sets troops into an idle state with no actions leaving them for dead when things scatter out. The enemy AI often tries to beat players by using small groups of forces with high level training to take on multiple attackers at once while dishing out heavy damage to the lower level troops of the player often taking out 10-20 men depending on the class used.

The system is a great joy to work with though, building the empire is made simple in a sense as weaponry or armor needs to be created before it can be used for new styles of troops, gladiator arena's allow for improved training and the ability to find hero characters to help your fight for dominance. The townhall serves to collect funds and food from other farms as well as distribution back to them. With classes of troops open such as scouts, archers, gladiators and more the game offers a large area to master before claiming total domination over all others.
