Nintendo DS Tech Preview - PAGE 1
Gabriel Vega - Sunday, August 8th, 2004

While the DS has been announced, many are without a full confirmation on features or supporters. In the article we'll break down features and current teams slated to develop for the DS this year. With that said lets get started on all of this.

The DS in Nintendo DS stands for quite a few things, the dual screen setup is the first to come to mind. Two LCD screens offers the ability for two perspectives, an in game view and map mode or if developers feel like it they can extend the map up vertically over both screens, in RPG titles inventory, maps and other items can be shifted to one screen so that game play actually does not stop. In racing titles lap times, rankings and map status can be shown on one screen while players race on the other. Instead of clutter players can get freedom and focus on the game. The dual screens are both backlit taking players away from the original GBA days where just the right amount of light was required to get a good grasp on things. The power of the DS is also not just limited to one screen in this handheld, the 3D abilities extend to both screens even if developers might not take advantage of this feature.

The DS name extends further, the DS also stands for developers system. The feature set of the DS allows for developers to let their minds roam and develop to the limit of their imagination, the space ability of the DS helps to support this by allowing a Gigabit or more of information to be stored on the specialized DS carts. Touch screen abilities, voice recognition, and wireless networking between DS systems or on the internet and more leave developers hard pressed to claim they are limited by the hardware abilities this time around.

Now that we've gone over the basic overview, lets now hit the actual abilities of the system.
